Academic Year/ Semester: Semester 9 (2022-23)

Venue: CIDCO Belapur

Participated by: Students of fifth year

Objectives: To under the water transport system of Mumbai. Some plans proposed for the ferry terminals. The technicality of the water transport management to some extent. Design considerations are to be made for designing a ferry terminal.

Brief of the event: Had a brief introduction regarding the water management and transport, Water area and extension of land. So the services that are possible on land are also possible in waters. The special planning authorities working are Mumbai port trust, MCGM (Municipal Corporation of greater Mumbai).

We discussed about the draft required from different types of boats and ships and the draft of the eastern water front. So the eastern water front start fronts the Apollo bandar and ends near Vadala (where we have the salt pans) so it’s from 10m to 0m Draft requirement-

  • Ships- 10-11m
    • Domestic cruises- 5-6m
    • Catamaran- 2-3m
    • Ro-pax -2m
    • Small boats- 1m

Bhaucha dhakka has a draft of 6m .and currently there are ro-pax services running which has draft of 2m. so it is more than enough. Also mentioned that the draft height at port needs to be maintained.

Added to contact Mumbai port trust and Maharashtra marine board – they explained the plans of  Alibaug, Murud, etc and other technicality for example, regarding other services that can be integrated at the terminal (but may no entertain) The route of the ferries is decided based on the rocks below. They according to them.
